Didn't know these existed until today. Just saw someone driving around with one of these hanging off the back of their 5 series. I can understand deploying this after you're parked, but driving around with one?

Yeah, the city. People destroy your plastic bumpers on these new cars. My old Mercedes I take has no problem, hit me with your best shot, no marks!

I've got the plastic strip, dime store version. I only use it while parallel parking, you actually aren't supposed to use them while driving. Some people hat them and think they are ugly, but you are keeping your car nice by having one.

They must have been a commuter because there is maybe 1 mile worth of street parking in my whole county. W123 right? I got one myself.

There's actually at least one case of this over on IMCDb !

Amazon reviews seem to confirm what I thought. Leaving it hanging there causes the straps to wear through and scratch your paint.

"Yeah, but I'd rather deal with the damage later than the extra 20 seconds to retract and deploy it now"

I just kept the bumper that was rear ended on, new one sits on the living room. And the damage? Well its a scuff and all, but so what? I got a brand new bumper sitting on it. I'll keep it for when I NEED to replace it, or shit even make a buck off it if you get rear ended again with the old one! haha.

I am retired, I go to Tokyo on the bus and train mostly, but other places I drive. When I'm in San Francisco I usually find a garage but sometimes you can get lucky, I see many bumpers pock marked in SF.

Haha. I'm going to make one of these with a flap so you can store stuff in it. It will be called the Trunk Trunk.

Yeah, that was me. Same username.
I help out a lot there. I've posted a couple cars, helped identify many vehicles.
Most people there are quite friendly, just like many here.

I had no idea that site existed. As a movie and obvious car fan I am intrigued.

That one got me good. Was just thinking when you cover the front of a car its a bra they could have at least come up with a suggestive name. :)

They've also got one for vehicles in video games, too. I've helped out a lot there, too.
They're both great websites.

I live a far cry from street parking, so it seemed quite weird to me.

When you drive with that hanging over your bumper, it moves around and causes more wear than it's protecting you from. Even taking it out when you park isn't good because it contacts the same part of your bumper paint every time and wears out that part. Here is the solution. It's called the Bumper Bot. (Caveat: I invented it.) thebumperbot.com. The second generation model will have cameras that activate when someone hits your bumper and video the offenders' license plate and upload the video to your phone.
